Stratford Hotel Fire
Wheeling News-Register, March 22, 1936, Reprinted with Permission
The old Stratford had 84 rooms and was known from the Atlantic coast to the Mississippi valley. There was no more popular resort in this part of the country. It was opened May 1, 1907. It was very commodious, having a fine, big veranda, spacious lobby, public dining room, three private dining rooms, ball room, billiard room and writing room. The approach to the hotel was by way of a circular road through a beautiful lawn of flowers and shrubbery, with several tiers of stone steps mounting to the main entrance. The view was remarkable, affording a vista that extended for miles around.
